A heavyweight Russian laboratory module that has faced a number of problems after its launch last week docked at the International Space Station on Thursday.
But at the time of the XO unexpected drama An accidental thruster's shot caused the sprawling complex to briefly stray from its normal line.Space station program manager Joel Montalbano said the station maintained orientation,
or "attitude," using a large NASA-supplied gyroscope when the thruster launch abruptly began at 12:34 p.m. EDT, about three hours after the launch. The 44,000-pound Nauka multipurpose laboratory glides over to dock.
The gyro couldn't cope with the unwanted pressure from Nauka's jets, and the space station, which extends the length of a football field with a mass of more than 930,000 pounds, began to tilt out of its normal direction.
Attitude control was sent to more powerful rocket motors in the Russian Zvezda module, which was equipped with Nauka. Minutes later. The thrusters in the Progress freighter are moored on the other side of Zvezda with additional muscles.
The space station ended up tilting up about 45 degrees from its previous orientation. It moves at a point about half a degree per second. but in more than an hour The station was back in the normal direction. There seems to be nothing worse than wearing it.
