The original mooncake filling is popularly believed to be lotus seed paste, which (due to its high price) is often substituted by white kidney bean paste instead. Other seed pastes that are used to fill mooncakes include red bean paste (made from adzuki beans), mung bean and black bean paste; but jujube paste and five kernel paste are also popular. As well as indulging in special mooncakes, many Chinese families will also eat pomeloes (a large type of grapefruit) while having barbeques outside under the moon.
Flights to Hong Kong leave London so regularly that it's relatively simple these days to make a quick trip to the city over a period of a few days. And, if you've got friends or family in Hong Kong, or you simply want to explore one of Asia's most fascinating cities, the Mid-Autumn Festival is the perfect time to visit.
The Mid-Autumn Event is a community vacation in China, and it's traditional to give mooncakes as gifts. Asian Haagen-Dazs stores promote snow product mooncakes, with a pear sorbet "duck egg" in the center. Godiva and McDonald's also have their very own assumes on the mooncake (no, they're not burger flavored). While I'm interested in learning, claim, Starbucks' "Wild Fruits and Cheese" version, I can't imagine being with no lotus seed paste, made from the ground up vegetables of the lotus rose, which can be my favorite.
It is, after all, a quality that joins me with my culture. As an ABC ("American-Born Chinese"), I don't discover a lot of Asian customs, mainly because my parents don't either. Equally born and increased outside China — my father in Taiwan and my mom in the Philippines — neither have powerful associations with the traditional festivals. I'michael convinced we'n forget absolutely when it weren't for the huge piles of mooncakes shown in every Asian store (and today Costco) for weeks. I had to Google the exact date of the 2013 Mid-Autumn Festival (It's nowadays, Sept. 19).
When I asked my parents concerning the symbolism or urban myths behind the mooncake, I acquired obscure answers of "it's something regarding a moon princess." My father told me to check out Wikipedia looking for responses and later sent me a YouTube movie that described one edition of the legend.
There are lots of ways to get cake. You can go to a local market and pick up a dessert that was already organized, but that features expecting it is new and moist at the time of purchase. You can hire somebody to get you to a brand new, wet cake, but several local meal designers are not even close to creative, so you will end up with exactly the same standard styles that you have always eaten.
Then there is the choice to move online and get cakes which are more creative. Several cakes should come from gourmet food and catering companies, and they might be much more expensive than the cakes you get at the local market. This might maybe you have wondering whether premium is worthy of the additional money.
